Nankya Jane's family is from the village of Kasanje which is not far from the Daughters of Mary (Bwanda) convent. Nankya is the grandmother of five children who currently live with her. After her son and his wife both died she took in their three sons - Matovu Jimmy (thirteen) and the twins Kato Paul and Waswa (twelve) - and their one daughter Tulyahabwa Faith who is eleven. After some time her second son also died and she was forced to take in her daughter-in-law and her two year old son Kamya John. She is barely managing to keep the older boys in the poor quality government school that they attend but cannot afford to send Tulyahabwa Faith.
Nankya Jane has five of her grandchildren currently living with her. Her son and his wife both died leaving Nankya Jane with their three sons – Matovu Jimmy (thirteen) and the twins Kato Paul and Waswa (twelve) – and their daughter Tulyahabwa Faith (eleven). A second son has also died which lead to her taking in her daughter-in-law and her two year old son Kamya John. Nankya Jane has raised her own children and now struggles to raise many of her grandchildren with very few resources. She is a peasant farmer with very little capital for the children’s school fees, scholastic materials or other household supplies. We visited the family midday so the boys were in the sub-standard government school that they attend (so not in our photographs) but Tulyahabwa Faith no longer goes to school at all. She also worries about the future of Kamya John and does not know what she will do when he is old enough to start school.
